What is your major, and why did you choose it?
I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in data science! Data science is a combination of math, computer science, and statistics, often sprinkling a bit of social science. I chose data science because collecting and analyzing data is the first step in pointing out or solving problems affecting our world, and that is precisely what I hope to do in the future! I want to use my technical skills to catalyze changes for the betterment of our communities.
Where are you going to school?
I just completed my second year at Stanford University. Fear the Trees!
What do you hope to do post-graduation?
I am unsure exactly what I want to do post-graduation, as I am still debating whether to pursue a master’s or go straight into the field. However, whatever I pursue will likely involve environmental justice, data, and some traveling.
What is your dream job?
I really don’t think I have a dream job! Ideally, I would be working directly with communities experiencing environmental harm and helping them identify and solve problems using data science. But I don’t think I have a specific position in mind!
What do you hope to learn while interning with GASP?
I want to learn what it means to address environmental justice issues from the ground up. Through my education, I have learned about stories and histories of ecological harm within underserved communities. Still, I don’t know what it looks like to partner with communities to help address these issues, and that is what I hope to learn while interning at GASP.
Why is our mission to reduce air pollution important to you?
GASP’s mission to reduce air pollution is important to me because air pollution can affect everyone, especially in Birmingham, a city with industrial roots that are still present today. The effects of bad air quality are widespread and can lead to health issues and contaminated soil and water. People should not worry about how simply living in their neighborhood can cause health issues, but this is all too common in Birmingham. Everyone deserves access to clean air, which is why GASP’s mission is special to me.
What is your favorite food?
I love seafood boils! It’s delicious, fun to eat, and a bonding experience between you and whoever you’re eating it with.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy everything true crime, from documentaries to podcasts. I also love baking, dancing, and going on walks.
Who or what are your influences?
My biggest influence is my family! I come from folks who are determined to leave the world better than they found it, which inspires me! I have seen unbelievable determination and passion from my family, and that pushes me to pursue my own interests that can be used to help solve problems in the world. I am incredibly grateful for the lessons of my family.
