Job Summary
The Community Science and Research Coordinator will play a pivotal role in advancing our community monitoring and research initiatives, while supporting grassroots organizing and campaigns by promoting data justice. This position is essential for ensuring equitable access to environmental data and empowering marginalized communities to use data as a tool for social change. The role involves working closely with community members to design, implement, and manage air quality monitoring projects, analyze and interpret data, and communicate findings to a range of stakeholders. It also includes supporting efforts to monitor pollution sources and document environmental concerns as they arise.
In addition to working directly with residents, the Coordinator will help grow and strengthen our community monitoring program by coordinating with Airkeepers to manage and track air quality data. The position will also build relationships and collaborate with external stakeholders—including academic institutions, researchers, and public agencies—to support community-driven science and ensure that impacted communities are centered in environmental research and advocacy. The ideal candidate is passionate about environmental justice, skilled in scientific and environmental policy research, and experienced in community engagement—particularly in promoting data justice and supporting frontline communities in using data for action.
Key Responsibilities
Air Monitoring & Program Coordination
- Oversee installation, maintenance, and tracking of air quality monitoring equipment.
- Support and expand the Community Airkeeper and Ambassador Program.
- Coordinate strategies that ensure community-based access to air quality data
Community Engagement
- Organize workshops, trainings, and events with residents and community partners.
- Provide tools and knowledge to residents for advocacy and reporting.
- Collaborate with organizing and legal teams to amplify data-informed community action.
Data & Research
- Analyze air quality data and communicate findings through reports and presentations.
Facilitate community-driven research and partner with academic institutions. - Investigate environmental justice issues, including proximity to pollution sources and public health impacts.
Capacity Building
- Assist other organizations and communities in launching their own air monitoring initiatives.
- Stay current on emerging technologies and best practices in community science.
Required Skills
- Strong community engagement experience, especially with frontline and marginalized communities
- Ability to coordinate and troubleshoot environmental monitoring projects
- Familiarity with managing equipment and data collection tools
- Experience with Project Management
Helpful Skills & Knowledge
- Experience with community-based research or environmental health
- Proficiency in tools like Excel, GIS, R, or Python
- Demonstrated understanding of air quality science, environmental justice, and public health
- Comfort working collaboratively with cross-sector teams
Pay & Benefits
- Pay: Compensation will be determined following the interview process, based on the scope of responsibilities and the candidate’s availability, interest, and alignment with the role.
- Schedule: This position may be structured as full-time or part-time depending on mutual agreement.
- Location: This is a hybrid position based in Birmingham, AL. Some in-person work is required.
