Meet the 2025 GASP Junior Board!

by | Aug 13, 2025

We are thrilled to announce our newest Junior Board members! These emerging leaders are marking their place in clean air advocacy by stepping up to serve their communities and strengthen GASP’s mission.

Our Junior Board is more than a leadership opportunity—it’s an investment in the next generation of environmental justice advocates. By creating space for young leaders to contribute their ideas, energy, and lived experiences, we’re ensuring that our fight for clean air continues well into the future. We’re excited to see how their voices and vision will shape the work ahead.

Hannah Burkle

I wanted to join the GASP junior board to deepen the connection and intersection of health advocacy and environmental advocacy. As a health educator, I know that the foundation of a healthy and happy life starts with equitable access to a healthy environment. If my participants can’t breathe then what am I even doing talking about healthy decision making?

It’s my goal to move past the silos of the social sector and fight for an equitable and healthy future together!

I joined GASP’s Junior Board because I’m passionate about creating healthier, more sustainable communities and plan to pursue graduate studies in Environmental Public Health. This role gives me the opportunity to connect with other advocates, learn from environmental leaders, and actively contribute to work that aligns with my career aspirations.

I joined GASP’s Junior Board because I care deeply about the health of my community and the environment we all share. I believe in taking action, advocating for change, and holding onto hope. GASP’s mission truly resonates with me. Being part of the Junior Board allows me to contribute to an organization that protects public health and uplifts local communities. GASP creates a space where the community can come together, support one another, and drive meaningful environmental progress. I’m honored to play a role in that effort.

Mychal Redeaux

Having grown up in this city, I believe I have an inherent awareness of how air pollution affects us all and beyond this, disproportionately affects low income communities like the ones I was raised in. I don’t know a lot of details about air pollution but am interested in learning more and doing my part in impacting positive change. Personally I am a young professional looking for opportunities to become a more well rounded citizen. I believe opportunities such as this one are great for natural leaders and it’s for a cause I believe in. My personal goals include learning as much as I can and helping as many people as possible with my knowledge and resources.

Dustin Whitmore

As a resident of East Lake, Dustin can literally smell the effects of air pollution from industrial emissions in his neighborhood. He joined GASP because he believes clean air is a human right and holding polluters accountable is how we empower our communities. In his free time he enjoys working on cars and going to concerts with his partner.

Jenna Honan

GASP has been a leading environmental justice organization in Birmingham for decades, working to protect communities from industrial pollution and advocating for cleaner air (and water) throughout the region. By joining the junior board, I’m excited for the opportunity to work closely with the community, to support the mission of expanding GASP’s reach, and to reinforce the community-centered approach to environmental advocacy.

I am proud to be a Junior Board member because GASP is a transformative organization for both the communities it serves and those who work alongside its team. GASP’s mission for environmental justice by empowering those who are most affected by climate change and pollution is at the heart of my passion for environmentalism.

Nisha Sharma

By joining the Junior Board, I hope to further amplify GASP’s mission through strategic advocacy, educational initiatives, and community-driven policy solutions—ensuring that every Birmingham resident has the right to breathe clean air.

 Caroline Hammond

“I chose to join the Junior Board because I wanted to help ensure that all Alabamians have access to a clean and healthy environment for generations to come.”

Riley Yager

I chose to join GASP because I was looking for opportunities to help environmentally that were local.

I hold the health of public and the planet in high regard. GASP educates and advocates for the community, providing opportunities to join the effort for environmental justice and a way to enrich myself. I have loved volunteering with GASP in the past, and the ability to become part of a dedicated GASP volunteer group, taking a step further in my capacity to help and grow is both exciting and important to me.
