GASP Hosts Second Annual Christmas Extravaganza: A Celebration of Joy, Care, and Community Power

by | Dec 17, 2025

GASP hosted our second annual Christmas Extravaganza this year, and it was everything we hoped it would be. Families from across Birmingham gathered with us for an evening filled with joy, laughter, music, and connection. We were able to create a warm and welcoming space where children could play, parents could breathe easy, and neighbors could come together in the spirit of care and celebration. We are grateful to every person who attended, volunteered, donated, or supported our Christmas Extravaganza. You helped make that night something truly special.

Our Extravaganza was created to offer a moment of joy for families living near heavy industry, dealing with ongoing pollution, or facing economic challenges. Environmental justice includes the freedom to thrive, rest, and be supported so our Christmas Extravaganza was a way to show what that looks like in action. Families enjoyed food, games, holiday music, crafts, and a gift giveaway that brought smiles to children throughout the evening.

We could not have made this possible without the generosity of our supporters and partners. Their contributions allowed us to create a space where every family felt welcomed and cared for. We extend our deepest thanks to New Start Covenant of Grace for providing the facility. We also thank the Yellowhammer Fund, Attorney David Ware of Louisiana, the Birmingham Barons, the Birmingham Zoo, Cahaba Brewery, the McWane Science Center, Top Golf, Haley Lewis Colston, Maggie Johnston, Pam and Dylan Abernathy, Attorney Richard Rice, Demetrius Lawson, Jerica Mabry, Jacqueline Grey Miller of A JFG Production, Benita Hayes, Greg Powell, Barbara Jackson, Lefern Dozier, and Jenny McInerney for their generosity. Every gift and in kind donation helped families leave with toys, treats, and a stronger sense of community.

The Christmas Extravaganza also highlighted something essential about environmental justice. Our movement is not only about challenging pollution and fighting for cleaner air. It is also about strengthening the communities who carry the weight of environmental harm. When we create spaces of joy and support, we reinforce the idea that every family deserves safety, dignity, and care. Community events like this help us deepen relationships, build trust, and create moments of healing and hope.

We are committed to making the Community Christmas Extravaganza a tradition that continues to grow and serve more families each December. With your support, we can keep expanding this event and offering more families the warmth and celebration they deserve during the holiday season.

Thank you to everyone who made this night possible. Thank you for your generosity, your kindness, and your belief in community care. Together, we will continue building a Birmingham where joy and justice go hand in hand.
