Forged in Labor: African American Work & Resistance at Sloss

For this special Black History Month edition of Community Chronicle, we explore the 2025 theme: African Americans and Labor by diving into the untold stories of Black laborers at Birmingham’s historic Sloss Furnaces. In this issue, we sit down with Ty Malungi, who sheds light on the resilience, struggles, and contributions of African American workers who toiled in the heat of the iron industry. Their labor not only fueled Birmingham’s rise as an industrial powerhouse but also shaped the fight for racial and economic justice that continues today. Through this conversation, we honor the past, reflect on the present, and recognize the ongoing push for equity in labor and environmental justice.
