Contact the EPA Administrator

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to soon issue tighter standards on smog. The EPA’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee has unanimously recommended that the standards be tightened to adequately protect public health.

Unsurprisingly, however, polluters and their allies are pushing back hard, arguing that the standard shouldn’t be strengthened. The EPA Administrator needs to hear from you. We have an opportunity to improve our air quality. Call and/or email EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and encourage her to strengthen ground level ozone pollution standards.

SAMPLE LETTER

Subject: Strengthen ozone standard to 65 ppb or lower

Dear Administrator Jackson,

I urge you to protect the American public from dangerous air pollution by strengthening ground-level ozone pollution standards. According to the EPA’s own analysis, setting the limit for smog at 65 ppb or lower could save up to 12,000 lives a year.

The current standard, set at 75 ppb during the Bush administration, ignores science and is not strong enough to protect public health with an adequate margin of safety, as required by law. The EPA’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee recently reviewed more than 1,000 studies and unanimously recommended tightening standards.

Children, the elderly and people with lung disease have suffered the consequences of ozone pollution for far too long. The science is clear: ozone pollution causes serious health problems, including death, and the EPA must act to protect the public from the dangerous effects of smog.

It is time to make the air we breathe safer for everyone. I urge you to follow the science and set the standard for smog at 65 ppb or lower.

Thank you for your consideration.
